About Us
MJ Counseling Services, LLC was founded in 2023 with the goal of providing compassionate mental health counseling for those battling substance use disorders in Northwest Indiana. We offer confidential one-on-one telehealth counseling sessions to help uncover the root causes of substance use, and create a path forward into a life free from addiction.
At MJ Counseling Services, we know that there can be a variety of barriers facing individuals who wish to seek treatment for their addictions. With our sliding fee scale and our secure telehealth platform, we hope to break down some of those barriers to make receiving personalized, quality addictions care easier than ever before.

Our Counselor
Michael Barrera, LCAC, and founder of MJ Counseling Services, LLC was born and raised in Lake County, IN. He received his BS in Psychology from Calumet College of St. Joseph, and then his MS in Clinical Counseling, with specialization in substance use disorder, from Indiana University - Northwest. As someone who has spent his whole life in the region, Michael cares deeply about the needs of Northwest Indiana residents struggling with addictions and other mental health challenges. Throughout his 10 year professional career, Michael has worked with both adolescents and adults in residential, IOP, group, and telehealth settings. He uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy informed by other counseling approaches to create a unique roadmap for each of his clients to begin to heal from their addictions. When Michael isn’t treating clients, he enjoys watching the Bears games on TV, trying out different NWI pizza places, and spending time with his family.
